That is a developer-experience moat, and developer-experience moats are the ones that compound.

I watched this exact compounding dynamic during the 2020 DeFi Summer. The protocols that won — Aave, Compound, the early money-legos experiments — were not the ones with the most novel cryptography. They were the ones that made it easiest for developers to compose financial primitives and settle value without friction. Aave's governance mechanics and Compound's collateral factors mattered less than the fact that a developer could connect lending to trading to payments in an afternoon. In the next two to four years, a meaningful fraction of economic activity will be initiated, negotiated, and settled by software agents with no bank account, no credit card, and no interest in HTML checkout flows. The settlement rails for that world may not look anything like Stripe's fiat plumbing. They look increasingly like stablecoin networks, smart-contract escrow, programmable wallets, and autonomous credit markets. The crypto ecosystem has been building the native settlement layer of the agent economy for years. The uncomfortable truth for legacy payments infrastructure is that an agent does not need a merchant account. It needs a wallet, an identity, and a settlement primitive.
